The Ocean Academy curriculum is set to reach more than 50,000 UK students this year, with a focus on plastic pollution of the oceans

New research suggests that less than a fifth of UK teachers find environmental education easy to teach in schools

LONDON, May 3, 2022 /CSRwire/ – SC Johnson, the maker of household brands like Mr Muscle®Ecover® and duck®, today launched a new partnership with UK charity Ocean Generation, a body responsible for tackling ocean plastic litter, to bring the ocean and its importance to classrooms across the UK. The partnership represents the next step the company is taking to advance education on the ocean plastic crisis, following The Blue Paradox, an immersive experience SC Johnson hosted in London last year in partnership with Conservation International on the subject. As part of the partnership, content from The Blue Paradox exhibition will be integrated into Ocean Generation’s Ocean Academy program, an open-source digital learning center with a toolkit of educational materials for teachers and parents.

According to a recent survey* commissioned by SC Johnson, almost half (49%) of UK primary and secondary school teachers think the current quality of education is not good enough when it comes to the environment and sustainability, with just a fifth ( 21%) find the current curriculum easy to use in the classroom. This comes as interest and investment in environmental education for young people has increased following a COP26 announcement by the UK Department for Education to implement more education about climate change in schools.

“With less than 10% of the plastic produced globally being recycled, there is a clear need for more education about the actions we need to take to reduce the impact of plastic pollution on the environment,” said Alan VanderMolen, Chief Communications Officer and Globaler Head of Philanthropy at SC Johnson. “Education is critical to bringing about the behavioral changes needed to achieve our vision of a zero-waste world, and we are proud to partner with Ocean Generation to support Ocean Academy to bring that awareness and engagement into the classroom build up.”

“Young people aged 24 and under make up over 40% of the world’s population, so understanding the ocean is critical,” said Richard Hill, CEO of Ocean Generation. “These next generation are our future leaders, and to protect one of Earth’s most precious ecosystems, they must first understand its importance and fragility. We are thrilled to partner with an organization like SC Johnson, who shares our ambition to raise awareness of the ocean plastic crisis, and we look forward to growing the Ocean Academy program together.”

With a third (33%) of teachers feeling that the current curriculum does not encourage their students to take sustainability action, the Ocean Academy program aims to ensure that a better understanding of the ocean is put into action. It is a complete curriculum consisting of accredited lesson plans for use online and in the classroom, with content such as:

  • An introduction to the ocean as a single, interconnected source of water that supports all life on the planet
  • The multifaceted role of the ocean, including highlighting its role in the oxygen we breathe, controlling our climate and regulating carbon levels
  • Our impact on the ocean, the challenges it faces and how we can make informed decisions to better protect it
  • The future of the ocean and inspiring young people to champion change, both at home and at school

Supporting funding from SC Johnson will help the program reach more than 50,000 UK students in 2022 and directly engage 15,000 students through face-to-face teaching at around 75 schools. By addressing the lack of quality environmental education, Ocean Academy aims to educate young people, encourage tangible behavior change and inspire collective action to combat ocean plastic pollution.

*The study, conducted in March 2022, asked 500 UK teachers about their attitudes towards environmental education in schools. The study involved both primary and secondary school teachers, as well as fee and non-fee school teachers.

About Ocean Generation
Ocean Generation is an inclusive global movement that exists to restore a healthy relationship between humanity and the ocean.

Founded in 2009 by film producer Jo Ruxton, Ocean Generation has sparked a growing wave of change by exposing the threat plastic pollution poses to our health and the health of our oceans. Her award-winning documentary, A Plastic Ocean, has been described by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the most important films of our time” and has raised mass awareness of the impact of plastic on our ocean. Today, they address the full range of human actions that threaten the ocean, with a particular focus on engaging young people.

No ordinary NGO, Ocean Generation combines the disruptive energy of a youth collective with a decade of on-the-ground experience promoting ocean action through science, storytelling and film.
