GUNTER: Environmental racism is the latest cause for woke warriors – Advice Eating

Call it the double whammy of environmental protection. Or maybe climate alarmism on steroids.

Federal Environment Secretary Steven Guilbeault and the Liberal government have decided to back a private member’s bill lashed out by former Green Party leader Elizabeth May that would call on the federal government to “evaluate, prevent and address environmental racism and advancing environmental justice”.

It doesn’t matter that no one has a good definition of “environmental racism,” nor a solid explanation of what “environmental justice” is, let alone how it might be measured and achieved.

(Frankly, the Greens themselves have set perhaps the best example of “environmental racism” yet, with the way their national executive denounced and bullied their leader, Annamie Paul — who is black — until she could no longer take the pressure and last resigned fall.)

The term “environmental racism” amalgamates two concepts — climate alarmism and identity politics — that make woke “progressives” vibrate with zeal for something that needs to be done.

It makes the liberals’ green crusade even more unassailable by linking it to the notion that systemic racism is all around us. (And you know what happens in the age of abandonment culture to anyone who doesn’t adhere to established theories on the spread of racism.)

Blogger Spencer Fernando (spencerfernando.com) calls this a “nightmare combination” and correctly predicts that once May’s bill is passed, the Trudeau government will begin to insist that opposition to its ” green” plan amounts to hate speech (because they indirectly support racism). ). Also, “it will become ‘bigotic’ to resist carbon taxes.”

That may sound crazy. But for the legions of awakened warriors, rationality is irrelevant.

It’s not about whether a concept can be defined or practically solved. What matters is what progressives’ opinions and outrage at their moral superiority are signaling to the rest of us.

That’s why Justin Trudeau is the perfect progressive. It doesn’t matter if his government delivers on any of its many, many lofty promises, just that it says all the right things about trending issues with enough exuberant tolerance and compassion.

If I had to try to explain “environmental racism,” I would say it is the belief that racialized Canadians live disproportionately near garbage dumps, toxic dumps, pipeline routes, and mines. Therefore, they are at greater risk of health problems caused by their environment.

Also, die-hard proponents of this new hyper-wake idea insist that activities that are harmful to the environment (which includes almost any human activity that earns someone a living) cause additional social disruption for indigenous people.

I’ve even seen accusations on social media that pipeline development amounts to the new residential schools for the damage oil and gas construction is causing to indigenous communities.

With both partners in our new Coalition of Convenience – the Liberals and the NDP – backing May’s bill, it will almost certainly become law.

We apologize, but this video could not be loaded.

At this point, I think it’s fair to worry that the combined hysteria over climate change and accusations of racism will lead this government, perhaps with the blessing of Dr. Theresa Tam and the Public Health Agency of Canada to consider declaring a public emergency to prevent climate change and end environmental racism.

This may sound far-fetched, but remember this is a government that used the Emergencies Act to rescind all Canadian civil liberties and turn Canada’s banks into a government weapon just for them to evict bouncy castles from downtown Ottawa be able.

And Liberals remain so extremely terrified by COVID that they continue to enforce a mask mandate in federally regulated jurisdictions even after the rest of the Democratic world has moved on.

It’s not hard to imagine liberals seriously considering taking extraordinary measures to deal with what they see as the twin scourges of climate alert and belief in systemic racism.
